Sicilian food like the history of the island contains all the ingredients of the Mediterranean area.. I don’t believe the island’s kitchens have ever been poor on flavour, colours and strong tastes.

Invasions, from the Arabs to the Normans, have left something in the island’s cooking habits and now Sicily can count on a variety of recipes no second to anyone’s in the Mediterranean. From Couscous to polenta, a typical plate from north of Italy, in Sicily it is

possible to taste everything, and everything has its own character developed and evolved through the generations .

Off course you can have couscous in north Africa, but certain recipes are typical and unique to Sicily; we will try to tell you what not to miss, and whether possible where we had the best of that plate.

This is a very limited list which we aim to update as often as we can while our girth grows happily.

Street snack from Palermo made with chick-pea. The Sicilian chips.

Mainly Palermo and Caltanissetta.
Streets and restaurants in Palermo.
Arancini di riso.
Rice balls filled with a rich Bolognese sauce.

Typical from Messina and surrounding areas, it is now available all over Sicily.

North east of Sicily, from Catania to Messina.
Caponata
Fried mixture of onions, peppers, aubergines, potatoes and capers with a very rich and strong taste.
Almost anywhere in Sicily.
My mum’s house.
Cannoli
Fried doughshell filled with fresh sweet ricotta cheese.
Almost anywhere in Sicily.
Any patisserie that looks very busy with locals.
Cassata
Very sweet and rich cake.
Almost anywhere in Sicily.
